WEEKLY UPDATE FROM REP. RYAN CHAMBERLIN
My fellow Floridians,
As we begin Week 8 of the Legislative Session, nearly all committees and subcommittees have stopped meeting. This past week in Tallahassee, I heard 26 bills in the Judiciary Committee and voted on 52 bills while in the House Chamber. One of these bills was HB 1, which will protect our kids from the harmful impacts of social media. This legislation was passed in the House and Senate and will be going to the Governor for his signature.
Now, we are preparing for the 2024 budget conference and being in the House Chamber for Session. Over the next two weeks, our main objective is to finalize the budget. This is an important time for our state!
HB 1 – Online Protections for Minors
I am proud to be a legislator in the Free State of Florida! At the end of last week, the Florida Legislature passed HB 1 with incredible bipartisan support. This great bill I co-sponsored will hold social media companies accountable and prohibit children under 16 from accessing social media platforms. Numerous studies show that social media has addictive qualities and seriously harms the mental health of young people. These Tech Giants know about the negative effects of social media, but all they care about is their profits. HB 1 will make an incredible difference in the lives of children across our state. It was an honor to support this great piece of legislation!
As a co-sponsor, I had the opportunity to participate in a press conference regarding the passing of HB 1. I applaud Speaker Paul Renner and the bill sponsors for their hard work and dedication to safeguarding the mental health and well-being of the next generation of Floridians. I look forward to the good work we will continue to accomplish for our state in the final two weeks of the 2024 Legislative Session!
Update on My Legislation
My bill, HB 1415, has been added to the Special Order Calendar and is scheduled to be heard tomorrow on the House Floor. HB 1415 would extend peer support opportunities to correctional officers and correctional probation officers. Peer support means to aid in physical, moral, or emotional support to a first responder by a first responder peer for the purpose of addressing physical or emotional conditions associated with being a first responder. I am proud of my work on this good bill and look forward to its success on the House Floor!
It is an honor to represent District 24 in Tallahassee! As always, if I may be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact my office by clicking here.
Have a great week!
Best regards,
Ryan Chamberlin
